Heh, seeing tabby highlight specific comments on ars is a reminder to behave myself on there. Reason being that people I know in the physical world also read it.

And no, I'm not in that thread - life is too short to argue with nazi-trolls.
Why? I'm just giving proper attribution to smart comments, ars is a place that comments are like half the story... After trying to link then correctly I realized I only needed to click on the quote button over there and copy the whole thing.

My concern isn't what you're doing, it's that people I know in the physical world don't see me shitposting there

To get a link, click on the text just left of the quote icon where it says how long ago (i.e. "an hour ago", "9 minutes ago") the comment was made.

Can Disney’s Circle really deliver a pr0n-free Internet?
Review: We test Disney's Circle Internet-filtering service.

Filtering out the bits of human knowledge you don't like and leaving all the bits you do is a deceptively difficult task; it's one of the classic "I may not know art, but I know what I (don't) like" problems. If you have a family with small children and absolutely any adult member of that family is not a complete libertine, though, it's a problem you'll need to address. The Disney-backed Circle filtering platform aims to help, via either a standalone IoT ($35) or a service embedded in higher-end Netgear routers and mesh kits, such as Orbi RBK50 ($300) or ($160).

Cloudflare to revoke 8chan’s service, opening the fringe website up for DDoS attacks
“It is the right thing to do.”

Cloudflare, an online infrastructure service that helps websites mitigate DDoS attacks, will be terminating its service for 8chan following the deadly, white nationalist shooting in El Paso, Texas over the weekend.

The owner of cloudflare recognizes its an empty gesture, though:
"While removing 8chan from our network takes heat off of us, it does nothing to address why hateful sites fester online,” Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare wrote in a blog post Sunday night. “It does nothing to address why mass shootings occur. It does nothing to address why portions of the population feel so disenchanted they turn to hate.”

The Tumblr ban of pr0n will be interesting to follow.
Automattic buys Tumblr from Verizon for reportedly less than $20 million

Today, Verizon announced that it's selling off Tumblr to Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com. Verizon didn't disclose the terms of the deal, but according to Axios, Automattic picked it up for "well below" $20 million.
...
Verizon purchased Yahoo and all of its assets back in 2017 for under $5 billion, and Yahoo had purchased Tumblr in 2013 for $1.1 billion. Clearly, Tumblr's value has steeply declined.

Automattic reportedly bought Tumblr for less than $3 million, according to Axios, a stunning drop in value from the $1.1 billion Yahoo paid for it in 2013.

Wirecutter have put together a pretty thorough review of various VPN providers, including clear explanations for what a VPN is good for - or not:

https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-vpn-service/

Their current recommendations (as of August 2019) are Tunnelbear and Mullvad (if you don't need a mobile app)
