Unreal Engine 4

Post by powerarmour » Wed Feb 29, 2012 12:03 pm

Unreal Engine 4 to be shown at GDC next week :-
Epic will be showing off Unreal Engine 4 behind closed doors at GDC next week. This time last year Epic showed off the impressive Unreal Engine Samaritan demo. That demo was running on a souped up super-PC running several GTX580s in parallel, so we’re unlikely to see that sort of carefully choreographed loveliness running in the next engine. Still, given how much has been gradually added to Unreal 3 over the years, the new build must be making quite a leap to justify sticking a 4 on the end.

A new Unreal Engine is big news for major developers and indies alike. The Unreal Development Kit has been free for years, and early last year Epic dramatically increased the royalty threshold tenfold, allowing new developers to make more money from UDK designed games before having to pay a cut to Epic. Hopefully we’ll see similar schemes and a free UDK appearing for Unreal Engine 4 in the long run. For now, it’d be nice to see exactly how much better it looks than its predecessor.

Greetings!
Unity Engine 4 will let devs "do so much more with so much less"
New animation tools, Flash, and Linux support will be included in update.
...
The new version of Unity fully integrates new animation tools from Mecanim, a Canadian company that Unity acquired last year. This brings skill from experienced animators who have worked with major publishers including EA and Ubisoft. Besides improving computational efficiency and increasing Unity's limit on simultaneously animated characters from dozens to "hundreds" at once, Unity President Dave Helgason stressed that the Mecanim system makes animation much simpler for developers.

"Things that would normally take several hours or even days to do—taking the animation data, making sure it fits the character, timing the motion extracts and making sure it all loops correctly—now that's all automatic so it's literally minutes... you can do so much more with so much less," Helgason told Ars. Users will also be able to buy canned animations from the Unity Asset Store, dropping fully animated characters into their projects unedited, or diving in deep to play with the underlying blend trees and state machines if they want.

Epic's Fortnite To Be PC Exclusive

Epic Games made the announcement today at Comic-Con that its first Unreal Engine 4 powered game "Fortnite" will in fact be a PC exclusive. The developer also released these new screenshots:
...

During the panel, Epic Games announced that Fortnite is the very first game using Epic’s revolutionary Unreal Engine 4 and is being developed for PC release in 2013. In Fortnite, players will explore, forage, collaborate and build by day in their own dynamic and expanding world. At night, they’ll work together to defend their prized fortress from the forces of darkness.

The 'philosophical' improvements of Unreal Engine 4
...
The engine reportedly creates clear lines of differentiation between programming and design tasks, which will let developers iterate and prototype quickly. The interface has been revamped for a more user-friendly layout, letting designers edit, recompile, and test a game easily. Designers will also be able to make small changes without needing a programmer to step in.
