Basically they screwed the current generation. Lets hope Sony ans MS can get this generation right.

Eh. Sony did it better originally and screwed the upgrade. MS screwed the original and did the upgrade right.

I'm more excited about my recent PC upgrades than either of the upcoming boxes to be honest, but I feel like MS is in the strongest position since all the X1X enhanced games won't need any enhancements for XS. (They might get them, but they already look great.) Sony of course has the bigger catalog, but the difference between the Pro and the PS5 will be a much bigger gulf and devs might not be as willing to return to working on their released games.

MS certainly isn't in any kind of 'stronger' position, they lost this generation hands down.

Kinect was a failure, the original XB1 was underpowered, and the XB1X lacked exclusives and sold poorly.

Add however many Windows 10 gaming machines are included in MSes gaming market. Now that MS is actually supporting PC again, the consoles sold doesn't even matter.

I was referring to the games, anyway. X1X enhanced games are literally everywhere, and will look fantastic on Scarlett/whatever.

PS4 Pro games will still look last gen on a PS5.

MS's Win10 gaming market is a lot smaller than their console market, and they actually make more revenue selling Surface hardware:

You are just assuming PS4/Pro games will not be enhanced on a PS5 (just as XB1 games are enhanced on XB1X)
It's still PC hardware... it's relatively straightforward to scale up in quality, this isn't no PS2>PS3 or PS3>PS4 architecture clash.

Not sure why MS doesn't just buy up Sony.

Other than PlayStation and their cameras you don't really see their products as much as you used to.

Sony used to be the brand of the best gear even if it has its peculiarities, as incompatible memory media. It's cameras, TVs and monitors were a bit like Apple's, badge of honor of the enthusiast...

I was thinking the same thing, the XbOne and PS 4 hardware is pretty similar, they are more like competing PC builders that run on a particular OS. IIRC that was one of the advantages studios had this generation, game codebase was similar between consoles. Enabling more image quality and higher resolutions must be pretty straightforward.

I'm actually not assuming that. I hope they are, as it means better quality games in the entire market. I'm just saying many devs have moved on from their last game, so it might depend how old the games are.

Sort of? Playstations GNM has seemed like it was why the PS4 Pro was made the way it was. I don't know if they're supporting Vulkan or not, but last I heard that was a no.

As for straightforward, you're talking about boxes that had 5GB or 5.5GB for games. They'd have to bring in better assets for it to mean much.

Anyway, I have to head out. It's an interesting market right now. Everything MS has done since Phil Spencer took over has been solid. Sony was already solid. I may or may not get a PS5, but right now I think I'll let the early buyers and software sort themselves out beforehand.
