Microsoft set to join private Linux security mailing list

Microsoft is set to join the private linux-distros mailing list following a request to do so last week. The mailing list is unique in that unreported security issues are discussed in a private space, this gives vendors advanced notice to provide patches for their products before an issue is made public. There has been some opposition to Microsoft joining, but not enough for the move not to go ahead.

Microsoft is injecting ads to install apps into Android

If there's one thing that's pretty much universally hated, it's when content that you didn't ask for is shown on your device. That's what Microsoft is doing though, as users are seeing ads to install apps show up when opening or sharing a file.

Microsoft Q4 2019 earnings: Intelligent Cloud finally gets more than More Personal Computing

Today, Microsoft published its quarterly earnings report for the fourth quarter of its 2019 fiscal year, or the second quarter of the calendar year. The company earned $33.7 billion in revenue for 12% growth (14% constant currency). Operating income was $12.4 billion for 20% growth (24% CC), and net income was $13.2 billion ($10.6 billion non-GAAP), for 49% growth. Diluted earnings per share was $1.71, for 50% growth.

There's one big difference this time around. Typically, the largest revenue generator is the More Personal Computing segment. Obviously, Microsoft is laser-focused on the cloud, but the company's miscellaneous bucket of Windows, Xbox, Surface, and more always comes out on top. Not this time though.

PSA - if you use the Outlook web interface (whether through Office 365 or Outlook.com), you may want to disable link previews:

Microsoft details Project Tardigrade, an Azure resiliency initiative

Microsoft has been making improvements to Azure reliability in recent months. In July, Azure CTO Mark Russinovich detailed some of these in a blog post, including a reference to Project Tardigrade, which was first announced at this year's Build conference. For those unaware of its purpose, it is a new service aimed toward improving Azure resiliency, and is appropriately named after the "nearly indestructible" microscopic water bears.

Microsoft reboots PowerToys for Windows 10
Microsoft has officially released its first preview release of PowerToys for Windows 10, officially bringing the accessory software brand out of retirement.
...
PowerToys for Windows 10, however, isn't quite as feature-rich as its predecessors. This initial preview release comes with just two Toys: The Windows Key Shortcut Guide, an overlay which displays the keyboard shortcuts available in a given context; and FancyZones, a new window manager designed to make it easier to tile open windows via snapping and automatic resizing into a preconfigured layout.

Giving FancyZones a try, a bit glitchy when the screen resolution changes, but other than that works well. Useful to easily divide the screen in 3 colums :)
No sig due to budget cuts.
